Groundbreaking Ceremony October 17, 2009 for New Adoption Center!
A Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new Lakeshore Humane Society Adoption Center will take place on October 17, 2009, at the building site on 431 E. Chestnut Street in Dunkirk 2:00 p.m. Everyone in the community is invited. City of Dunkirk Mayor Richard Frey will be at the ceremony.
“Operation: Homeward Bound!” began in 2004 to raise funds for a new adoption center to be located in the City of Dunkirk, New York. The Lakeshore Humane Society’s Annual Yard Sale, in Floral Hall, at the Chautauqua Fairgrounds, was the kickoff for the start of the fundraising campaign. “Operation: Homeward Bound!” was to get across the idea that the adoption center is a stepping stone to finding permanent, loving homes for the many animal orphans currently in foster care. Everyone in the society is excited about the adoption center’s construction as it represents a goal that is long overdue and continues to fulfill the society’s mission to serve unwanted and/or mistreated stray animals.
The new 5400 square foot adoption center will consist of the following components:
Public Space
• Entrance lobby, which includes a customer service center to assist the public with surrendered and adopted animals.
• A modest area to sell basic supplies for new pet owners (kennels, collars, food dishes, etc.).
• There will be viewing rooms where perspective owners get to know their new four-legged family member.
Incoming Animal Holding Space
• Dog holding kennels.
• General cat community holding pens.
• Isolation ward for dogs and cats in need of medical care.
Animal Care Area
• Emergency room to manage any additional immediate veterinary needs.
Volunteer Work Area
• Office space.
• Conference room.
• Storage room.
• Garage
This is a practical working facility yet also public friendly. The facility will provide a healthy work environment for the volunteers (who will be needed to make this adoption center a success), and an animal friendly environment for the misplaced and traumatized animals. Our Society understands the importance of introducing community programs for teaching compassion and care, educating about the importance of spaying and neutering, licensing and vaccinating pets, and encouraging individuals to get their next pet from a humane society, shelter or a rescue organization.
Please help spread the word about Lakeshore Humane Society’s progress. Thank you, to everyone, for your thoughts and support. The Lakeshore Humane Society is proud to be a part of this community!
